With the death of her husband, Virginia's marriage ends, which is anything but "happy". For the first time in many years, she is returning to her homeland, Cornwall, to spend the summer there with her two children. The film explores how societal expectations, school situations (the titular "exam"), and social class differences affect the child's psyche. It sensitively portrays how the carefree interaction and trust between two children can be damaged by the competitive spirit and social status modeled by the adult world.
