Julio César Chávez vs. Meldrick Taylor, also billed as Thunder Meets Lightning, was a light welterweight world championship bout held on March 17, 1990 between WBC world champion Julio César Chávez of Mexico and IBF world champion Meldrick Taylor of the United States, both at light welterweight, which was a historic event in professional boxing. It was titled "Thunder Meets Lightning" as an allusion to the punching power of Chávez and fast handspeed of Taylor. The fight was expected to be a rousing and exciting one but few, if any, could have foreseen the intense action it would produce, or the lasting fame it would earn in boxing history due to its dramatic and controversial ending that continues to be widely debated to this day. It would later be named The Ring magazine's Fight of the Year for 1990, and later the "Fight of the Decade" for the 1990s.

On June 7, 1996, Oscar De La Hoya fought Mexican legend Julio César Chávez (96–1–1) for the Lineal & WBC Light-welterweight championship. De la Hoya, with a record of 21–0 with 19 K.Os, defeated Chavez by a fourth round TKO. The fight was stopped due to a bad cut suffered by Chavez. Until their rematch in 1998, Chávez stated that De La Hoya did not defeat him since the fight was stopped. De La Hoya successfully defended his titles with a twelve round unanimous decision against undefeated former WBC Lightweight Champion and number one light welterweight contender Miguel Ángel González (41–0–0).

Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Márquez IV was held on December 8, 2012, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, billed unofficially as deciding the WBO 'Champion of the Decade' belt. Pacquiao was knocked out with one second left in the sixth round by a right to the jaw, sending him toppling face-first into the canvas.

Way back in 2004 Filipino Pacquiao knocked Márquez down three times in the first round, but the battle went the distance, the pair couldn't be separated by the judges and a draw was declared. In 2008 the pair fought again, and that time Márquez lost his WBC super-featherweight title to Pacquiao in a controversial split decision. "Now it's time to shed doubt over who the best fighter is," the Mexican said in the run up to tonight's 12-round bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. "I want to win this fight because I believe I won the first two." When the fight was promoted in Pacquiao's homeland, Márquez gave his opponent added motivation by wearing a T-shirt bearing the legend: "We Were Robbed."
