When Vera Rohleder wants to meet her husband Bernhard at the airport where he should arrive from Moscow, she is not successful. Later she is told that Bernhard died in a tragic traffic accident. She flies over to Moscow to identify the corpse, but the dead man shown to her doesn't seem to be her husband. When she tries to find out what really happened she gets to meet Andrej Bubka, a Moscow militia officer, who also looks for her husband. Vera cannot believe what Bubka tells her about the reasons why her husband has disappeared.

Praised for its fine photography and production design if not its narrative, Sergei Bondarchuk directed this adaptation of the tale by Alexander Pushkin. Boris Godunov came to the Czarist throne at the end of the 16th century, after the original heir to Ivan the Terrible had died. At first, things went well for Godunov (played by Bondarchuk), but when the Russian people began to believe he had killed Ivan the Terrible's son in order to gain the throne, an alliance sprang up against the new Czar. Events continued to spin out of control as a young monk was presented as the son Godunov had supposedly killed. Now he was openly accused of failing an assassination attempt, which seems to be even worse than succeeding. In addition to these woes, Boris Godunov began to suffer serious health problems. So much for the joys of kingship.

When a well-known novelist, Boris von Dideritz and his wife, Lisa visit the residence of Count Grokholsky, the young woman immediately stands out among the local women for her striking beauty, natural elegance and irresistibility to men. Old Count Grokholsky, Grigoriy, his young good-for-nothing son and Danila Okhlopkov, court counselor and friend of the Gorokholskys, are all enchanted by her. Lisa enjoys the attention, and because of her husband's indifference to her, she flirts with and gives false hope to each of her potential suitors. They become agonizingly jealous of one another, and their suffering only increases when Lisa disappears one day without trace.
