In the spring and summer of 1949, the People's Liberation Army launched an offensive under the orders of Mao Zedong and Zhu De, they crossed the Yangtze River and Nanjing was liberated on April 23 which signaled the fall of the KMT regime, Chiang Kai-Shek fled to Taiwan; on October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong standing on the rostrum of Tiananmen, solemnly declared the foundation of the People's Republic of China.

Based on Zhou Keqin's excellent novel, Xu Mao and His Daughters weaves a story about the life and sufferings of Xu Mao, an aging peasant and his four daughters in the countryside during the Cultural Revolution. They struggle to make ends meet since his wife's death. Preoccupied with worries, he loses touch with his maturing daughters. It takes the stubborn but kindly intervention of a woman making a governmental inspection tour to cause father and daughters to appreciate their loving family.

Since the establishment of the bamboo weaving cooperative, the appearance of Zhulin Village has changed significantly. Visitors seeking to learn, inspectors, interviewers, and tourists placing orders have been coming in an endless stream. They eat all day and all month long, leading to frequent quarrels, fights, and cases of alcohol poisoning, causing the smart and capable cafeteria manager, Xiao Wangfa, to be driven to tears and indescribable suffering. Once, when Vice Secretary Guo of the Provincial Committee came to the village for an inspection, the lunch prepared for him was eaten by the leaders from the county. Xiao Wangfa had no choice but to serve simple home-cooked meals like mung bean porridge, steamed buns, and peanuts, anxiously preparing for punishment. Unexpectedly, Vice Secretary Guo was very pleased with the meal, and the villagers of Zhulin saw hope from this incident.

In the spring of 1947, Chiang Kai-shek launched a major attack on Communist base areas in Shandong and northern Shaanxi. Mao Zedong (played by Zhang Keyao) strategized and made a strategic decision to withdraw from Yan'an, using the "Kunlun Column" of the central government to contain the main force of Hu Zongnan (played by Wang Zhenjiang). Peng Dehuai (played by Lei Fei) started the Battle of Panlong, captured the enemy brigade commander alive, and captured a lot of money

The Min River is crucial for Fujian Province’s economy. In 1947, Lin Sen Guan, a Communist Party member and driver of the “Fuzhou” steamship, smuggled weapons and radios to a guerrilla base with fellow party members. The enemy, led by transportation inspector Wang Xun, sent spy Li Boguang to monitor them. Lin Sen Guan tricked Li Boguang, but the spy later discovered the weapons. Lin Sen Guan pushed him into the water, witnessed by helmsman A Wang, who refused to reveal the truth despite enemy pressure. The underground party decided to transport remaining weapons to the guerrilla zone. The “Fuzhou” set sail, followed by enemy ships. Near Luohan Tan, a guerrilla team unloaded the weapons. The enemy opened fire, but A Wang steered the “Minh River” into an enemy vessel, causing mutual destruction. The weapons reached the guerrilla zone, and Lin Sen Guan continued their underground efforts.
