Neither a Devil Nor an Angel

Eleven directors from eleven countries each contribute an eleven-minute short reflecting on the events of 11 September 2001: A village teacher in Iran tries to explain to her young students what's happened; city kids in Burkina Faso think they've spotted Osama bin Laden; a deaf Frenchwoman in Manhattan writes a Dear John letter to a man who left that morning for work at the World Trade Center; a Chilean remembers Allende; events recall other deaths; a mother endures more than her son's death. Tones vary, as do the locales. Most concern coming to terms with the events of the day, but at least one confronts the viewer with tragedy and death.

An ill-fated flight ends in the Western Desert where it crash-fives into quicksand as the passengers try to control their temper. The movie provides archetypes as they start reflecting on their lives in crisis, some of them being hopeless, and some of them being hopeless romantics.

Iman is surprised that her brother Hossam is in a relationship with actress Nahed. His ideal image collapses and she decides to abandon her morals. She invites Sherif to the house in the absence of Hossam,and he discovers that she has no previous experiences so he decides to marry her.

This is the story of young Hassem, the son of a powerful sheik, set at the beginning of Hegira. When the youngster's uncle is murdered, Hassem decides to go to Mecca with a view to finding the culprit and punishing him. But what he discovers there is not the murderer but the prophet Muhammad. Touched by grace, Hassem converts to the new religion and comes back to his village to propagate the new faith. Which is not to his father's liking, since the Muslim religion is opposed to feudal rights and privileges. The infuriated sheik curses his son and starts persecuting the new converts.

This big-budget historical epic from acclaimed Egyptian director Youssef Chahine features a crazed turn by Patrice Chereau as Napoleon Bonaparte. The film, an Egyptian-French co-production, deals with Napoleon's occupation of Alexandria and its effect on a typical Egyptian family. Michel Piccoli leads the cast as a general in Napoleon's army who tentatively befriends a local poet and falls in love with two young Egyptian brothers, reflecting complex themes of colonial desire, affection, and personal connection.

Ibrahim, the owner of a large car workshop, marries a poor girl called Mahasen, which his brothers fear because of their fear of sharing their inheritance. At the same time, Ismael feels a lot of hatred and hatred toward Ibrahim, who works for him in the workshop, The problems all the time with the pros, but soon change the relationship between Mahasen and Ishmael.

In the 12th century's Andalusia lives Ibn Rushd a prominent Islamic philosopher with his wife Zeinab and daughter Salma. The principality is ruled by Khalifa ElMansour who has two sons, ElNasser, an intellectual that likes Ibn Rush and is in love with his daughter Salma. The younger son Abdallah is more into dancing and poetry, spending most of his times with the gypsy family and getting the daughter pregnant. The Khalifa is depending on the extremists to build his army granting them more power which they use to combat artists and philosophers. The extremists succeed in recruiting Abd Allah and train him to kill his father. Events go on where Marawan, the gypsy singer, is killed and Ibn Rushd's books are burnt. Adapted from the real life of Ibn Rushd AlMasir is Chahine's statement against extremism.

Set in 1933, the mayor informs the peasants that the share of irrigation of their land will be split equally between them and feudal lord Mahmoud Bey. Shehata Abu Kaff, goes to Cairo to play for Zamalek club. The club buys him an apartment, but the owner sells the apartment to him and to another lady.

Azouz lives with his aunt Hayat and her husband, Navy officer Yahya. Egyptian intelligence suspects the Greek girl Marcel. They recruit Yahya to watch and repeat their meeting. Hayat is killed and Marcel is arrested while leaving the country, they press her and inspect Azouz, who urges him to steal a tape of her belonging to Hayat who is recording It has dialogues with her Yahya.

Fardous is in prison for stealing a watch. She shares a cell with Samia, who works in a show band and is wrongly arrested in a brothel and Mona who accidentally killed a child with her car. When Fardous comes out, she works in Asfour's poultry farm, but leaves it when he and his son compete to marry her.

Hanafi al'abiha steals a jewelry shop with his partners and hides the bag with his brother Ahmad before they were arrested. His three accomplices escape and kidnap Ahmed's wife Duaa until they recover the bag. Hanafi is temporarily released to lead the Police to the place of his colleagues, and the events follow.

After six months at sea, three navy officers return home for a short 24-hour leave, hoping for warmth and affection from their wives. Instead, they're met with cold shoulders and mistrust.
