A young engineer and his wife are affected by an odd incident one night on the road.

Follows police detective Mohammad Alavi as he tries to deal with the death of his wife and daughters, and solve the case of a murdered woman.

A young man, with unknown troubles and philosophy of life, hits the streets of Tehran to clear his mind. Soon he finds himself in the role of a taxi driver. As he drives through the city, each person he picks up brings his story, stories that he tries to make sense of in order to understand and make sense of his own life.

Parvaneh, a famous singer and movie star, has an affair with a married man. A student named Baabak, who suffers from leukaemia, falls in love with Parvaneh. They have a good time together for a while, until she hears about Baabak's disease and decides to send him abroad for medical treatment.

A hundred and fourteen famous Iranian theater and cinema actresses and a French star: mute spectators at a theatrical representation of Khosrow and Shirin, a Persian poem from the twelfth century, put on stage by Kiarostami. The development of the text -- long a favorite in Persia and the Middle East -- remains invisible to the viewer of the film, the whole story is told by the faces of the women watching the show.

The film portrays the characters as well as the social origins of these men, and as it progresses, explores the backgrounds of these women.
