Legend of Eight Immortals

Night Inn (Chinese: 夜店; pinyin: Yè Diǎn) is a Chinese black-and-white film released in 1947, directed by Huang Zuolin and starring the popular Shanghai singer Zhou Xuan. The film is based on the Chinese theatrical adaptation of Maxim Gorky's The Lower Depths by playwright Ke Ling. The play and the film were both banned in China during the Cultural Revolution but were popular in the post-Mao period.

A street-wise and tough orphan called Maverick is arrested for a petty theft and sent to an orphanage, but succeeds in concealing a watch he had stolen from an old shopkeeper just before his arrest. At the orphanage, he is recruited by a crooked warder for further and more serious crimes. With neither a house nor any land to call his own, Mozhuor has no choice but to live temporarily aboard Xinghua's small boat. Because he once saved Xinghua's life, Chunliu's family welcomes him warmly and does everything they can to help him rebuild his life.

Wang Laoda from Xiaowang Village may be slow-witted, but he is honest, simple, and kind-hearted. The production team leader, Li Yongxu, and his wife notice that Wang Laoda lives alone and find it difficult for him. They try several times to arrange a marriage for him, but the prospective brides are deterred by his simplicity. During the three years of natural disasters, Wang Laoda meets a widow named Da Cui, who is fleeing with her children. Despite the villagers’ ridicule, Wang Laoda marries Da Cui.

The story takes place in Beijing before the Liberation. Beggars’ Gang leader Niu Er, played by Han Shanxu, terrorizes the streets with his gang of thugs. When Sun Douzhi, played by Liang Qinggang, refuses to pay him tribute, Niu destroys his douzhi stall. His hot-blooded son, Sun Liu, played by Wu Weidong, vows revenge. Sun Liu and roast-meat shop owner Boss Liu both fall for Li Shuying, played by Wu Weiling, daughter of Li Wobei, played by Wang Ningsheng. Too poor to compete with Boss Liu, Sun Liu joins the Beggars’ Gang and uses Niu Er’s influence to defeat his rival. Disgusted by his son’s transformation, Sun Douzhi disowns him, while Shuying enters a Buddhist convent. After Niu Er betrays him, Sun Liu sees through his schemes, steals his dragon whip, and becomes the gang’s new leader. His first act is to lead his men in destroying Boss Liu’s shop, prompting Sun Douzhi to declare that he will sever all ties with his son.

A husband is called back to emergency duty from his honeymoon and his bride investigates the sudden death of a couple also on their honeymoon.
