FILM

This entertaining and enlightening documentary sheds a light on a pioneering moment in film history and the gay rights movement, as it revisits the break-through 1960s gay films of Pat Rocco. Rocco was responsible for the very first gay films that were shown openly to the paying public in the late 1960s. Situated before hardcore porn became the norm, and in marked contrast to the somewhat darker gay porn that was coming out of New York at the time. Pat Rocco’s film were more sun-dappled, featuring tanned and happy-looking naked men on sail boats and on beaches, celebrating their identities and the beauty of the male body. The filmmakers got to talk to the generous, rather humble and open-minded Rocco just before his death. It took a team of dedicated Canadian filmmakers to capture a fairly obscure moment of indie film history that deserves to be remembered.

Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride poster
FILM

Over the course of a year, film follows Vancouver Pride Society president Ken Coolen to various international Pride events, including Poland, Hungary, Russia, Sri Lanka and others where there is great opposition to pride parades. In North America, Pride is complicated by commercialization and a sense that the festivals are turning away from their political roots toward tourism, party promotion and entertainment. Christie documents the ways larger, more mainstream Pride events have supported the global Pride movement and how human rights components are being added to more established events. In the New York sequence, leaders organize an alternative Pride parade, the Drag March, set up to protest the corporatization of New York Pride. A parade in São Paulo, the world's largest Pride festival, itself includes a completely empty float, meant to symbolize all those lost to HIV and to anti-gay violence.

I'm a Stripper: Boylesque! poster
FILM

James & the Giant Pasty has his very own harem of young men. He's the ringmaster and snake charmer of Boylesque T.O., Canada's first all-male burlesque troupe. This talented group of dancers, actors, and performance artists has been busting their buns to put male nudity and sexuality back center-stage where it belongs. Their diversity and openness to different expressions of sexuality and body types is well renowned. A Boylesque show is guaranteed to leave you hot under the collar, howling with laughter, and screaming for more! Though his troupe is a mosaic of gay, bisexual and tri-anything - James is decidedly and (surprisingly!) straight. So just what lures a straight man into this world of wigs, sequins, and bawdy delights? Perhaps this Queen Bee likes having his own gay honey hive.
