Despite being the last royal blood of the Great Ghenghis Khan, a woman still has to face poverty and loss in the 20th century.

A farmer and his wife live in a rural part of Inner Mongolia with their three children. Chinese population control policies prevent them from having any more. The farmer sets out for the nearest town to obtain birth control. He comes upon a Russian truck driver who has ended up in a lake. The farmer takes the man back to his farm, and after initially being appalled, the Russian becomes enchanted with the peaceful life of the countryside and decides to stay. But his presence presages big changes for the peasants.

This film expresses feeling in a highly obscure way. It presents a seemingly desultory time period to tell the story of two generations. A young girl who’s confused about what lies ahead is sent to England to receive education from childhood. She indulges herself in cyberlove and cannot get herself out of the hurtful affair. A middle-aged father who’s perplexed about death left his hometown for Beijing when he was young. He feels helpless about the status quo of the state-owned film studio. Tortured by terminal disease, he gives up the hope to live on.

Bayaraa, a weather-worn muralist who once tasted glory in Europe, returns to Mongolia with only a box of paints, a rooftop tent, and his loyal stray dog. Each day he descends the wall of an abandoned factory, covering its crumbling concrete with sweeping murals of mythic Mongolian landscapes. Watching him is a sardonic balloon, at once conscience, companion, and a stroke of fable. When officials announce the factory will soon be demolished, Bayaraa becomes determined to leave behind his masterpiece.
