At the same time, Ivan Astafyev, a former commander of a reconnaissance platoon, who was released from prison, returns to his hometown of Gorky. And immediately becomes a victim of an attack by bandits, and then a false accusation of beating the attackers. Ivan's pre—war acquaintance, Captain Shvedov, helps out of trouble, who gets him a job at the Dynamo sports society to train policemen in hand-to-hand combat.

He passionately wants to become a star in world politics and for this he is ready to go as far as he can to meet the West. In the fall of 2014, a young Russian journalist Alexei Suvorov, who dreams of money and fame, travels to Donbass as part of a humanitarian mission to interview the famous battalion commander Lesentsov, who is fighting on the side of the militia. He intends to sell the collected material to a German publication, with which he cooperates in parallel and where he plans to get a permanent job. During the journey, Suvorov encounters numerous obstacles that always distance him from his intended goal. As a result, he is forced to act rashly, risk his life and make mistakes. His fellow travelers are people with different destinies and attitudes to what is happening.

The series is set in 1961. Cameraman Viktor Khrustalyov is in a difficult situation; he is suspected of being involved in the death of his friend, talented screenwriter Kostya Parshin, who committed suicide during a drinking-bout. The authorities try to put Khrustalyov in prison by any means. Viktor needs to shoot the comedy "The Girl and the Brigadier" in order to get permission to make the film "Shards" after the wonderful scenario left from his deceased screenwriter friend. Young director Yegor Myachin wants to adаpt this screenplay. Khrustalyov arranges him as a trainee to the venerable director Krivitsky for a comedy. In the same film act Khrustalev's ex-wife Inga and his young sweetheart Maryana, with whom Yegor Myachin is also in love.
