A Finnish romantic comedy, based on a play about cousins trying to inherit a legacy. To get the inheritance they must be married, even for a day.

Liisa Harju, a lively and quick-witted teacher from Savo, gets her first job in Latomeri, Ostrobothnia. She falls out of favor with the local women when the eligible bachelor, doctor Eino Korpinen, takes a liking to her.

Master Tuula Vihervo teaches languages ​​at a women's college, where American-Finnish Charles Thompson Jr arrives to do an inspection on behalf of his father's college donor. The story, set in the 19th century, revolves around the hot-blooded Jussi, a young farmer, and his friend Antti and their brushes with the local nimismies (sheriff) and the häjyt (badmen). The film, shot on location on the plains of Ostrobothnia, conveys a good sense of its unique landscape. Both Järviluoma and the director, Jalmari Lahdensuo were from Ostrobothnia and the film suc­cessfully expresses a feeling of the true spirit of the province.

Young and innocent maid Elina is persuaded into forgetting her childhood sweetheart Uolevi, and to marry Klaus Kurki, a local nobleman with money and influence. An ideal match according to her family and the greedy parish priest, but all is not as it seems: Kurki is a vicious man, tormented by the spirit of his last wife.

A new steward, agronomist Paul, arrives at the Siltala estate. The self-assured steward causes tension among the gentry, especially among the estate's owner, Captain Lilli's widow. The flamboyant Lieutenant Hugo courts the owner of Siltala, but Lilli and Paul find common ground.
