There is another character, a journalist, who comes in and out of the film, and functions as a commentator and witness of their lives. The dialogue veers on philosophical messages as director, Slamet Rahardjo, tries to represent both the lower and upper classes, mixing his narrative style with realism.

Hendro, Diana’s father, does not approve of her romance with Bije, and wants to marry Tony. Then Diana runs away with Bije to a small village where Diana’s aunt lives. This infuriates Hendro and he orders his men to capture Bije. Eventually, Bije and Diana return. When Diana is at home, she feels pain in her abdomen, and she is diagnosed of having a malignant cancer in her ulcer and won’t live long. Hendro even apologises to Bije’s father, but the latter refuses him. Bije even begs to his father to apologise to Hendro, but instead, Bije is thrown out of the house. Eventually Bije and Diana get married, but before the honeymoon ends, Diana passes away on Bije’s lap.

She manages to get a house arrest instead, thanks to the efforts of Eddy Sud, a university student who lives with Vivi’s family. Boss and Benyamin come to the house and the latter confesses that he was the one who shot the policeman. Boss and Benyamin then turn themselves in to the police. The story ends with a farewell party for Vivi, who is going abroad to study. Boss sings a song titled “Kembali ke Jalan yang Benar” or “Returning to a Righteous Path”.

The residents of a dormitory led by Bu Siti each have their own personal issues. Tari, a dance student, falls in love with a man old enough to be her father. Rahimah, a medical student, is about to be forced into marriage in her village but is rescued by Nasrul. Maria, a flight attendant, gets entangled in a love quadrangle. She is loved by Imansyah, a co-pilot, but Maria is more attracted to Broto, a wealthy merchant. However, Broto himself is more interested in Sita, a dance instructor. Additionally, two teenagers, Ani and Ina, are placed under Bu Siti's care because their parents are preoccupied with politics. All these problems are resolved in a comedic manner.
