A Twist of Fate

Kassim (P. Ramlee) returns to Singapore after finishing his studies in London and is thrust into a betrothal with the daughter of his father’s benefactor, Salmah. However, Kassim has already met and fallen in love with someone who shares his interest in Persian poetry. She is Rahimah, a flower salesgirl in Singapore. They go on dates to the nursery, and spend time together (dancing) in a paradise-like garden (Alkaff Gardens). Even after Kassim returns to Kuala Lumpur to work in his benefactor’s rubber plantation, he never forsakes Rahimah and has a rendezvous with her in Singapore when the opportunity arises. Together again, they watch movies at the Rex Theatre, and vow to get married. Unfortunately, Kassim’s father insists on him marrying his benefactor’s daughter, Salmah, who is a rich and cultured girl. Kassim decides to fulfil his father’s death wish and marries Salmah. Eventually, fate brings Kassim to reunite with Rahiman again in their twilight years.

Aini (Aini Hayati) is left to fend for herself after her father passed away from sickness. She finds employment as a maid for a nasty woman, who seems to be in a persistently vengeful mood and showers her with verbal and physical abuse. Rather coincidentally, Aini’s boyfriend Ramlan (Ali Rahman) happens to be the brother-in-law of the abusive employer. Aini confides her sorrows to Ramlan, who clearly identifies with her grim view of life, being unemployed and in a pretty forlorn state himself. Nonetheless, Ramlan is from a middle-class background and his proposal to marry Aini, who is considered socially inferior, is met with outright disapproval.

Omar Rojik’s ‘Batu Durhaka’ tells the story of Wira and his ultimate fate of committing disloyalty and sin towards his mother and family. His nemesis is Perkasa, a vicious and lustful tyrant in the village community who has kidnapped his younger sister Indah. The kidnap was witnessed by Wira’s handicapped brother Mala, who could do nothing other than watch and be rapped by Perkasa’s followers. When Wira confronts Perkasa, he is defeated and put away on a boat to nowhere. After drifting afloat for a long distance, he is rescued by Mahaguru Bentara who brings him to a cave to recuperate. Under the tutelage of the Mahaguru, who is a martial arts exponent, Wira becomes one of his leading disciples and falls in love with his daughter Desawati. He betrays Desawati's love and their consummation when he decides to return to his village, to seek vengeance against Perkasa.

Workers at an Eveready battery factory are disgruntled because their wages are low compared to a neighbouring factory. The factory manager exploits the workers’ rising discontent by colluding with a traitor within the workers’ ranks to instigate a strike in the factory, part of a devious ploy to take over the factory from the benevolent but incapacitated factory owner/boss. The colluders create dismal working conditions and make use of every opportunity and incident to raise the call for a strike, to sour industrial relations in a bid to close the factory down so that they can coerce the boss to hand over ownership.

Hassan (P. Ramlee) is 10 when his father died. His mother had died when he was younger. His late father's boss feels sorry for Hassan and adopts him. However, Hassan's foster father's own child, Aziz (Jins Shamsudin) is jealous of Hassan and hates him. When both of them have fully grown up, Aziz and Buang (Salleh Kamil) always bully Hassan. At the same time, Salmah (Saadiah) has developed a crush towards Hassan, fuelling Aziz's fury. When the Second World War is approaching, the Royal Malay Regiment begins recruiting young soldiers.

Abidin a young composer finally returns home after 5 years pursuing his career. He was shocked to find out that the love of his life is now blind. He strives hard to gain back her sight. Hassan, Abidin's close friend also hides his feelings for Juwita. Hassan gets the help of Rohani, a dancer in Abidin's band to derail his concentration to her instead. She took the oppurtunity for sure because Rohani as well has feelings for Abidin. Abidin left Hassan in charge to look after Juwita during her operation because he had to go to Bangkok for a performance In bangkok Rohani sent a false telegram to Juwita saying that Abidin had died in a terrible accident. What will be of Juwita hearing the bad news?

Tells the tale of Aladdin a young naughty boy with brains. One day a sorcerrer came up to him and admitted that he was his father. He brought Aladdin into a cave to accompany him in getting a lamp in the cave. Aladdin just followed his orders. As he got hold of the lamp he was hypnotized by it and couldn't get his eyes off of it. As the sorcerrer screamed to Aladdin to pass him the light Aladdin resisted and he was buried in the cave as the cave came down on him. To Aladdin's surprise there was a Genie in the lamp and requested his wishes to return home. Aladdin had three wishes to be made. What will his three wishes be?

Things get complicated when Amir returns from the city and tells his mother that he's going to marry Aminah a girl from another village not Rosini. THis wasn't accepted by his mother but in the end they got married. Unfortunately the day Amir brings back his new wife to meet his sister, Faridah was caught in a terrible accident and had passed away. His mother has accused Aminah for bringing bad omen into the family.

Orang Minyak was digitally restored by the Asian Film Archive in 2018 using a 16mm black & white composite release print from its collection.

In the Katong area, in eastern Singapore, lives Jaafar, a rich man, together with his wife Rubiah and her brother, the charming but badly-behaved Salim. One day, Salim visits his grandfather in Johor, where he meets a young and attractive girl, Salbiah. Salbiah's family is deeply in debt to a man, and unable to pay him back. The only solution is for Salbiah to marry that man. Salim, after sympathizing with Salbiah, promises to help raise the money. Ecstatic and thankful, Salbiah gives her chastity to Salim. Back in Singapore, Salim, after a long silence, writes to her that he in fact cannot help her and that he will not see her again. Heartbroken, Salbiah leaves her family and starts wandering through Singapore in search of the treacherous Salim.

Tiga Abdul (The Three Abduls) is a 1964 Malaysian comedy film directed by and starring P. Ramlee. It tells the story of three brothers who are caught in a web of trickery set by the cunning Sadiq Segaraga who uses his three daughters to fleece the three brothers of all their wealth. The movie is a tribute to traditional folktales with a moral set into the story and is set a fictional middle eastern country named Isketambola, which is loosely based on Istanbul, Turkey.
